This certificate will prepare current and future elementary teachers to effectively teach math content. Because of the importance of having elementary teachers highly qualified to teach math content, this certificate can add to students’ opportunities in the professional field. Upon completion of a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education or Alternative Licensure Certification, students with this certificate will meet the “highly qualified” requirements to teach math content at upper elementary and middle school levels on an elementary license (K-8).
Special Requirements
Students may be required to undergo a TB test and a criminal background check prior to beginning any field experience course. All courses must be taken for a traditional grade of A, B, C, etc. For courses offered only for credit/no credit, a grade of credit (CR) must be earned.
Career and Educational Opportunities
New Mexico has a shortage of middle school math teachers. Additionally, because of the importance of having elementary teachers, of lower grades, highly qualified to teach math content this certificate can add to students’ opportunities in the professional field.
