Program Description
The program is designed to prepare students for careers as pharmacy technicians in hospital, retail, mail-order pharmacies and other pharmacy related industries. Students receive classroom, laboratory and practical experience covering all aspects of the profession. Included in the laboratory portions of the program is a 45-hour content-specific block of instruction dealing with the preparation of sterile intravenous products as required by the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy.
Special Requirements
Starting in 2012, the Pharmacy Technician program will be designated as a Limited Entry Program at CNM. Students who wish to pursue the Pharmacy Technician program will need to apply and be accepted before they can start the program. Please refer to the Office of Limited Entry Programs for information about application requirements, selection criteria, and deadlines.
Career and Educational Opportunities
The Pharmacy Technician program typically has a high placement rate for its graduates. Jobs are available in hospitals, retail and specialty pharmacies. Graduates are eligible to take the National Certification exam for pharmacy technicians. Graduates who have taken the certification exam have consistently scored higher than the national average.

Special Notes
Students planning to continue their educations at higher education institutions are encouraged to take CHEM 1410/CHEM 1492 and COMM 2221. Students should have reliable transportation while in the program. Clinical assignments are given to students requiring travel throughout the metropolitan area.
