SUST 1134 - Introduction to Sustainability: Environment, Society, and Economy
3credit hour(s)Pre- or corequisite:IRW 0970 or appropriate placement score. This course broadly introduces topics, issues, and developments within the “3 E’s” of Sustainability (Environmental health, social Equity, Economic vitality). The instructor and visiting lecturers will present on issues such as renewable energy technologies, climate change, water use, food production, “green” architecture, socially responsible business, carbon footprints, microlending, ecotourism, and recycling, among others. The course will focus on one question: how do we create a sustainable future that supports environmental health, social equity, and economic vitality? Students will examine both contemporary challenges to sustainable development and examples of successful sustainability initiatives on local, national, and global levels.
