Exercise Science and Wellness, Associate of Applied Science

The Exercise Science and Wellness associate’s degree is a four term program that provides students with an in-depth understanding of the science of human movement.  Coursework includes anatomy and physiology, exercise kinesiology, health and wellness principles, fitness assessment/prescription, exercise testing, exercise and disease prevention.  The curriculum is designed to prepare students for employment in the following areas:

  • Personal Trainers
  • Health and Wellness Coach
  • Fitness Consultant
  • Group Fitness Instructor
  • Kinesiology Taping Practitioner
  • Health Club Management
  • Employee Wellness Education

As students progress through the program, they are eligible to sit for the following industry certifications:

  • Fitness Certificate
  • Corrective Exercise Specialist
  • Group Fitness Instructor
  • Health and Fitness Special Populations
  • Kinesiology Taping Technician
  • Health and Wellness Coach

Students who complete their degree in the Exercise Science and Wellness program are prepared to enter the fitness health and wellness workforce.

Special Requirements

Physical Requirements

Students must be in good physical and psychological health. Students may be asked to provide documentation of a recent physical examination. Many health programs require the student to be able to safely lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations are made for students with disabilities. However, some disabilities may prohibit students from completing program specific competencies or gaining employment. Students with disabilities that may interfere with completing program competencies are advised to contact the School of Health, Wellness & Public Safety (HWPS) Office for more information.

Transportation

Students are responsible for their own transportation to off-campus training sites. (i.e. clinical courses at hospitals, internships, etc.)

This is a terminal degree.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program are encouraged to apply for certification to earn a nationally recognized personal trainer Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) or group exercise certification through organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and American Council on Exercise (ACE). Nationally recognized certification provides an entry-level credential for those seeking gainful employment as Personal Trainers or Fitness Instructors at local health clubs and fitness centers.
