The School of Adult and Basic Education (SAGE) provides college-credit ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes designed for non-native speakers of English to prepare students for college-level reading and writing. In ESOL classes, instructors devote time to explicitly teaching grammar and vocabulary, teach listening and speaking skills, spend time on aspects of American culture that impact college students, assist students in comparing cultural differences in academic writing styles and expectations, consider cultural differences related to academic honesty, and teach various genres of writing through guided practice.
ESOL 0350 and 0450 are repeatable for-credit courses that do not serve as prerequisites to other courses in SAGE’s DE program. ESOL 0551, 0751 and 0951 serve as prerequisites to other DE courses in SAGE, and they may be taken in place of ENG 0550, 0750 and 0950, respectively.
Special Requirements
Students registering for ESOL classes should have some understanding of academic English skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
