Program Profile

Program Description

Automotive Technology prepares graduates for entry level positions in the automotive and light truck service and repair industry.

Skills needed for success

  • Computer literacy, ability to read and write English at a community college level, general math skills, critical thinking, ability to visualize the rotation of parts in space, excellent eye-hand coordination, and at least average physical conditioning

Program Information

This program is a

  • First step to a career earning middle-class wages as a skilled craftsman in the transportation industry.

This program can be completed

  • In 15 weeks to two years depending on the level of certificate or degree obtained.

This program is designed for

  • Career orientated individuals with a high level of interest in problem solving involving transportation technology, critical thinking, and hands-on tool use.

  • Any Term

  • Day and evening courses are available. Some weekend courses are available as well.

Program Requirements

Ability to work safely in a shop environment, entry level hand tools provided by student.

Physical requirements

  • At least average physical ability.

Other course requirements

  •  A valid driver’s license.

Information for people with felony convictions

  • Tier one employment may be limited. Secondary level employment generally available, varies by shop.

There is no tuition in the School of Applied Technology. Registration fees apply which will vary from year to year.

Educational Opportunities

Meaningful employment.  Many of our courses are transferable to universities and CNM currently has transfer agreements with many colleges in New Mexico.

Current pay rates

  • Graduates are generally paid a percentage of the shop labor rate per job. Individual technicians earn more as their skills and ability grow. Journeymen technicians earn $40,000 to $80,000 annually.
