Program Description

The Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts is both a stand-alone degree and a transfer degree. For students transferring to four-year schools, it covers the curriculum needed for the first two years of baccalaureate study. The degree includes a general education curriculum of 35-38 credit hours, which is accepted by all New Mexico state colleges and universities as the general education core for degree completion.

Special Requirements

Students may also choose to complete an Associate of Arts in a particular discipline or field of study. Students then follow the transfer pathway in that area so they can more smoothly transfer into a major at UNM. Transfer degrees offered include Anthropology, Communication, Criminology, English, History, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology.

Liberal Arts is also home to the General honors program, which transfers to the University of New Mexico’s General Honors program. General Honors (GNHN) and Arts & Sciences topics courses numbered between 1096-1996 or 2096-2996 may be used as electives in the Liberal Arts degree. Depending on the courses selected, the program includes classroom, studio, and laboratory instruction, with the option for distance learning for many classes. The AA in Liberal Arts is designed to accommodate diverse educational interests, with courses taught in the day, in the evening, and on weekends. The liberal arts courses also support the program requirements of other CNM academic schools.
