ENGR 1101S - Survey of Engineering Seminar

Prerequisite: Reading and Writing Skills 2  
Recommended: ENGR 1101  
A seminar series to compliment ENGR 1101 featuring selected speakers who are employed in fields related to the different fields of engineering or are career development professionals. Presentations and open symposium format emphasize career opportunities for engineering graduates. Course assignments are focused on personal career development (resume, cover letter, interviewing, networking). The course will be a combination of exploration and preparation:

Exploration of possible careers and companies through engagement with practicing engineering professionals. This will include:

  1. Small group discussions between 2-4 students and an industry professional from an engineering company.
  2. Each week will include professionals from different fields of engineering.
  3. Sessions will begin with brief overview of how the industry professional’s career pathway unfolded and how he/she arrived at their position.
  4. The rest of the meeting will consist of questions from the students. 

Preparation for the internship employment search through a partnership with the Center for Workforce and Community Success at CNM. This preparation will include:

  1. Workshops on creating resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and cover letters.
  2. Workshops on elevator pitches and approaches to exploring and engaging with industry professionals.
  3. Additional lectures related to licensure and professional societies. 


Theory Hours: 15
