Prerequisite:IRW 0980 or appropriate placement scores Recommended:CHEM 1115L* and MATH 0970** This course will introduce non-science majors to the basic chemistry required to understand topics of interest to the artistic community, such as solubility, color and preparation of pigments, electrochemistry, chemical safety and toxicity. The course will illustrate chemical principles, acquaint students with scientific methods, allow them to critically evaluate scientific claims as presented in the media and in other communicative forums, and emphasize the creation of works of art using their knowledge of chemistry.
Note(s): *It is recommended that students take CHEM 1115L concurrently with CHEM 1115. The lab experience serves to enhance the student’s understanding of the concepts discussed in lecture.
**It is recommended that students take MATH 0970 prior to taking CHEM 1115, as a working knowledge of basic algebra is useful.
