EDUC 2260 - Emergent Literacy for Diverse Learners

3 credit hour(s)
Pre- or corequisite: EDUC 2285 .
Examines the fundamentals of literacy development for emergent readers.  Course competencies are built upon national and state standards for reading and focus on the development and assessment of oral language, phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, phonics, sight words, fluency, spelling, and student vocabulary. Students will learn about research-based methods, materials, and strategies including structured literacy, differentiation, interventions, and considerations for ensuring accessibility for a diverse student population including struggling readers, students with disabilities, and English language learners. Requires field experience as part of the course.
