ST 1010 - Beginning Surgical Technology I

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Verbalize of the role of each team member in the surgical environment.
  2. Define the meaning of surgical consciousness.
  3. Describe the design of the operating room related to function.
  4. Apply the principles of microbiology to sterilization, disinfection, sterility, and infection control.
  5.  Apply the scientific principles of aseptic technique.
  6. Describe the scope of practice of the surgical technologist in the operating room.
  7. Describe the use of accessory supplies and their pertinence to specific procedures.
  8. Define the mechanisms of wound healing and classification of surgical procedure.
  9. Correlate the principles of pharmacology in labeling and using medication during surgical procedures.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology.
  11. Discuss the reasons for patient fear and anxiety in the adult and pediatric patient.
  12. Identify the basic components of a computer system.

Course Description
Includes scope of practice, technologist role, medical ethics and medical terminology, basic principles of aseptic technique and anatomy and physiology applied to surgical procedures.
