ST 1001 - Introduction to Surgical Technology

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Discuss the history of the operating room and the team who work in this environment.
  2. Apply medical terminology as related to the operating room.
  3. Apply the principles of microbiology to acheive infection control in the healthcare environment.
  4. Explain the difference between medical and surgical asepsis.
  5. Discuss the reason for specific operating room design and the surgical equipment found in the the operating room.
  6. Identify safety concerns for both the patient and the staff in the operating room.
  7. Explain the importance of treating every patient with dignity and compassion.
  8. Discuss various procedures performed in the operating room.
  9. Identify emergencies that can occur in the operating room and the different roles in such emergencies.
  10. Describe tasks performed in the instrument room.

Course Description
This course is designed to give the student a broad overview of the responsibilities of the Surgical Technologist and the operating room environment. This will prepare the student for entrance into the Surgical Technology program.
