DA 2508 - Practice Management and Oral Health Promotion

Student Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe key aspects of Public Health, Oral Health Promotion, and community outreach strategies for dental assisting.
  • Explain the dual role of dentistry as a business and a health care service.
  • Describe common organizational cultures that could exist in the dental practice.
  • Define communication.
  • Identify common leadership traits, describe management responsibilities and differentiate between leadership and management.
  • Discuss the role of the office manager/ business assistant
  • Discuss computer applications in the dental office.
  • Identify types of practice records and files
  • Describe how to use the different filing systems (alphabetic, numeric, cross-reference, chronologic, and subject
  • Describe the process of scheduling appointments for maximum productivity.
  • Identify three types of preventive recall systems and state the benefits of each
  • Discuss the management of inventory systems.
  • Demonstrate ways to make financial arrangements with patients.
  • Describe the importance and management of collections in the dental office.
  • Identify common payroll withholding taxes and discuss the financial responsibility of the employer.
  • Discuss the purpose of dental insurance, identify insurance fraud, and identify the parties involved in dental insurance.
  • Define managed care.
  • Explain dual coverage.
  • Detail claim forms processing including the procedure and purpose of claim forms follow-up.
  • Describe the preparation and demeanor needed for a job interview.
  • Discuss factors that should be considered in salary negotiations.
  • Discuss the elements of an employment agreement.
  • Describe the steps for achieving career objectives and the steps for job termination.

 


Course Description
This course provides basic skills and background in various aspects of dental reception functions and office management procedures as well as public health and oral health promotion with a focus on community engagement. Topics to be discussed include dental public health, oral health standards and promotions, community outreach telecommunications, appointment management systems, inventory systems and supply ordering, insurance, bookkeeping, and planning and managing a career path.  Course activities include the design of your professional resume.
