Basic land navigation is an introduction to land navigation skills needed to function as a wildland firefighter. The class begins with a general overview of maps, to include different map types and incident specific maps. Furthermore, students will become skilled in the use of a compass, GPS receiver, clinometer and interpreting topographic maps. Finally, students will also complete Firefighter Math, a course that refreshers firefighters’ knowledge of basic math concepts and tools necessary for making math calculations in the field, including those used in mapping.
