Examines the essential components of intermediate literacy instruction for students in grades 4-8. Course competencies are built upon national and state standards for elementary reading and focus on the development and assessment of student vocabulary, academic language, background knowledge, reading comprehension, and student research and analysis of narrative and expository texts. Demonstrates research-based methods, materials, and strategies for diverse learners, including differentiation and interventions for struggling readers. Requires field experience as part of the course.
