School of Adult & General Education (SAGE)

Description

The School of Adult and General Education (SAGE) provides college-credit English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. These courses are designed to prepare non-native English speakers for college-level reading, writing, and oral communication demands. ESOL instructors not only address listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, but they also concentrate on developing students’ grammatical and lexical knowledge. Additionally, ESOL teachers help learners explore the aspects of American culture that impact college students. This exploration challenges learners to compare and contrast cultural differences in academic writing styles and expectations, consider cultural differences related to academic honesty, and teach various genres of writing through guided practice.

See Recommended Sequence of Courses

ESOL 0350  and ESOL 0450  are repeatable, for-credit courses that do not serve as prerequisites to other courses in SAGE’s Developmental Education (DE) program. These courses are designed specifically to support students exiting SAGE’s non-credit Adult Basic Education (ABE) English as a Second Language (ESL) program as they continue on to college-level courses; they also assist second language learners who have some background in English to develop their language skills in preparation for college coursework. It is recommended that students enrolled in the ABE ESL program complete at least one semester at the Advanced level (0650) before taking ESOL 0350 and/or 0450.

In ESOL 0651  students analyze English sentences based on the principles and concepts of grammar. ESOL 0551 , ESOL 0751  and ESOL 0951  serve as prerequisites to other DE courses in SAGE, and they may be taken in place of ENG 0550 , ENG 0750 , and ENG 0950 , respectively.

Students who register for ESOL 0551, 0751, or 0951 may also take ESOL 0350 or ESOL 0450 during the same semester. They should not, however, take the DE English (ENG) equivalent of an ESOL course during the same term. Students who start the ESOL sequence of prerequisite courses are not committed to completing the entire series; rather, they have a choice between ESOL and ENG each term.

In addition to the academic sequence of ESOL 0350, 0450, 0551, 0651, 0751, and 0951, SAGE also has an ESOL Certificate of Completion in Culture and Communication.  This certificate is linked to a specific career or technical field at CNM.   Students take four, college-level ESOL classes that use content-specific materials to support the career technical field.  They also take one introductory course in the career or technical field to complete the 16 credits required for this Certificate of Completion.  Students may take between one and four of these courses to increase their language proficiencies in the areas they have identified as necessary for their career interests.

Cost and Financial Aid

  • ESOL 0751 and ESOL 0951 are financial aid eligible for 2015/2016.
  • ESOL 1001, 1010, 1020, and 1030 are under review for financial aid eligibility in 2016-18.

Special Requirements

Students entering directly into credit-level ESOL courses (who have never taken an ABE ESL class) must have some knowledge of English before taking ESOL courses.  Students new to CNM who would like to learn basic English language skills should be directed to the ABE office on the first floor of the Student Services Center (SSC).

Students registering for the ESOL Certificate of Completion classes must have an English 1 proficiency.  Students can take the ESOL Certificate of Completion classes in one term or on a part-time basis over several terms.

Career and Educational Opportunities

The School of Adult and General Education values the idea that educational institutions should prepare students for the world we live in. This means students will need to have basic academic language skills as well as the abilities to apply known information to new and “real world” situations, to work effectively on teams, to integrate relevant technologies into their lives, and to communicate effectively.  All of these skills are emphasized in the ESOL classes to prepare students for the workforce.

Earning the ESOL Certificate of Completion in Culture and Communication in Health Care will allow students to enter into the Community Health Worker Certificate program.  Alternatively, students may also choose to enroll into more than 20 Associate Degrees and/or certificates programs at CNM in the Health, Wellness, and Public Safety School as long as they meet the prerequisites.
