The Aviation Maintenance program is a FAA certified maintenance training program that prepares students to qualify and take their FAA tests. It also prepares the student to enter the work force as an Airframe and Powerplant maintenance technician (AMT)
Skills needed for success
Desire to be an Aircraft Maintenance Technician. Also a basic mechanical interest.
6 semesters for the degree and 4 semesters for the airframe or powerplant certificates.

Either in the fall or spring terms. However not every term has a starts, we run cohorts and currently only run two cohorts at a single time.

Information for people with felony convictions
The FAA does not specifically prevent anyone with a felony to obtain a FAA mechanics certificate. However you may not apply for the FAA final test if you have been convicted of any state or Federal statue pertaining to narcotic drugs, marijuana and depressants or simulates drugs or substances with the preceding 2 years.

Approximately $300.00. Standard CNM fee. However the FAA written test (3 each) are $150.00. The FAA oral and practical test is $600.00

Educational Opportunities
Many colleges and universities offer 4 year degree in aviation maintenance. Many of our courses are transferable to universities and CNM currently has transfer agreements with many colleges in New Mexico.
Employment Information
In order to work on any FAA certified aircraft or airliner all mechanics must have an Airframe and Powerplant certificate issued by the FAA.
Currently there is a shortage of aircraft technicians. This shortage is becoming more critical. The experience requirements a rapidly dropping.

Sample Job Duties
The job duties of an A&P mechanic vary from preventive maintenance to repairs. A mechanic makes routine inspections, documents inspections and repairs, performs scheduled maintenance and runs tests after making repairs or performing maintenance. Job duties may vary based on which part of the plane is being worked on. A mechanic working on the exterior of a plane may be fixing a broken wing, repairing paint or securing a door so it seals properly. A mechanic working on the engine may be changing the oil, replacing belts or repairing a broken part.
Desirable Job Skills (non-technical)
An A&P mechanic needs strong mechanical ability and skills. A mechanic is required to solve mechanical problems quickly and must have the physical ability to move about when working on airplanes. An aptitude for working with complex equipment and understanding technology is also necessary. Training in computers and electronics provides good preparation for the career.
